Ready4Success building blocks
As preschool teachers, we hear a lot about kindergarten readiness. Academic skills are often at the forefront of those conversations, however research indicates the social and emotional skills are crucial to social and academic success. Three key understandings about this topic include:

  • 1 in 5 children enter kindergarten with poor social and emotional skills.
  • Children living in poverty are most at risk for lacking the social and emotional skills necessary at kindergarten entry.
  • Children who are not successful socially and emotionally in the early years often continue on along a trajectory of failure (socially and academically).

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Define social and emotional development and identify appropriate social and emotional skills for preschool age children.
  2. Gain an understanding of why social and emotional skills are important for kindergarten readiness and overall success.
  3. Identify ways to assess the social and emotional development of preschoolers and how to use these assessments to inform practice.
  4. Examine ways that teachers can support the social and emotional development of preschool age children.
